We’ve forced every guest who stepped into our home that summer to play the game and join our Love Letter fandom. Since first playing Love Letter over the summer, my family has found a way to bring it up in every possible conversation. The only people who won’t like this game are people who just hate to have a good time. I mean, you’ve got love, you’ve got drama, you’ve got strategy, you’ve got a spy and you’ve got a princess. Whoever successfully gets their letter to the Princess wins a “favor” token. The game then progresses in rounds, with each player using their chosen card’s abilities to knock others out of the game or get closer to the Princess. The first player then draws a card and can then play one of two cards in their hand. To set up, shuffle the deck, deal one card to each player and leave the rest of the pile in the middle.

The best part? The instructions for gameplay are literally on the card. Other than the Princess, characters include a Guard, King, Handmaid, Chancellor and Spy(!) - all of which do different things. Each card features a number 0 through 9 and a specific character, as well as instructions for the card’s play. The game itself features a deck of 27 cards and a handful of “favor” tokens that come in the cutest velvet pouch.
